Same brand, a different test

NASM also sells a Personal Trainer Certificate, an online test you take open-book and without a proctor. It is not NCCA-accredited, and it is not the exam this page covers. A guide that quotes open-book rules or a percentage pass mark is describing that certificate: the NASM-CPT is closed book and reports a scaled score.

Before you can sit it

NASM checks three things, listed in the table above: your schooling, a current adult CPR and AED card, and a government photo ID. There is no minimum age in the handbook, and if the CPR/AED card has expired by check-in, you are turned away; for renewal NASM rejects cards from online-only CPR providers.

A practical order:

  1. Book a hands-on CPR/AED class first. The card has to be current on exam day, and the class date is the one part of the timeline you don't control.
  2. Pay for the exam, alone or inside a study program. The 180-day window opens on the purchase date.
  3. Schedule through the NASM portal, which passes you to PSI. Steps and fees are on registration and cost.

Six domains, one model

Questions follow a 2021 blueprint split into six domains. The biggest share goes to exercise technique (24%), then program design (20%), which rests on NASM's OPT model. Each domain has its own section in the study guide, with the topics asked and the usual traps.

Staying certified

The NASM-CPT lapses unless you renew it every 2 years. Renewal takes 2.0 CEUs (20 contact hours) per cycle, including 0.1 CEU for a current CPR/AED course.

The recertification application fee is $99. NASM One and Recertify for Life cover the application fee, but not late fees. Keep the CPR/AED card current through the whole cycle: the course counts toward the CEUs.

In the frontal plane, which movement occurs at the shoulder joint when raising the arm directly out to the side?

Use Check on the answer you favor. The verdict shows up with a short note on each choice.

  1. Check
Raising the arm straight out to the side moves it away from the body's midline, which is abduction, and that motion happens in the frontal plane.
  2. Check
Shoulder flexion raises the arm forward in front of the body, a sagittal-plane motion rather than a sideways one.
  3. Check
Rotation turns the humerus around its long axis (internal or external rotation) in the transverse plane; it does not lift the arm sideways.
  4. Check
Shoulder extension moves the arm backward behind the body in the sagittal plane, the reverse of flexion.

Which balance assessment would be most appropriate for evaluating a client's static balance capability?

  1. Check
The Star Excursion Balance Test has the client reach the free leg in several directions while balancing, so it measures dynamic balance, not stillness.
  2. Check
Timing how long a client holds a still, one-legged stance isolates static balance, because the base of support never moves.
  3. Check
The T-Test is a timed sprint-and-shuffle course used for agility; it says little about holding a stationary position.
  4. Check
The Thomas test checks hip flexor length while the client lies on a table; it is a flexibility assessment, not a balance test.
3/4 · Program design · 20%

In Phase 1 (Stabilization Endurance) of the OPT model, which repetition tempo is typically prescribed?

  1. Check
A moderate 2/0/2 tempo belongs to the strength-focused phases, where the goal shifts from stabilization toward force and muscle growth.
  2. Check
Moving as fast as can be controlled is the tempo of maximal-strength and power work, which comes after stabilization is built.
  3. Check
Phase 1 uses about four seconds of lowering, a two-second isometric hold, and a one-second controlled lift, so the client spends more time under tension controlling posture and joint position.
  4. Check
Dropping quickly through the lowering phase removes the slow eccentric control that stabilization training depends on.
4/4 · Technique · 24%

A beginner lands a box jump on top of an 18-inch box. Why should the client step down from the box instead of jumping down?

  1. Check
Jumping down from a box creates a depth-jump stimulus, an advanced reactive drill that beginners are not ready for.
  2. Check
Stepping down actually lets the heart rate settle a little; the reason for it is joint loading, not conditioning.
  3. Check
A spotter cannot cushion a landing; the problem with jumping down is the impact on the client's joints, not supervision.
  4. Check
Dropping from the box lands the client with more force than the jump up produced; stepping down skips that extra impact, which a beginner gains nothing from.

NASM-CPT, short answers

Is the NASM-CPT accredited?

Yes: the NCCA accredits the CPT exam (see the accreditation row above). The open-book NASM Personal Trainer Certificate sits outside that accreditation.

Can I take the NASM exam from home?

Yes. Besides PSI test centers, NASM offers an online sitting under a live remote proctor; it stays closed book. Registration compares the two.

What does NASM certification cost?

The exam alone is $599; programs that bundle it cost more and change price often. A dated breakdown, with retest and late fees, is on registration and cost.

Missed the renewal date: what now?

Unused CEUs do not carry over. A 90-day grace period costs an extra fee; after that, the exam must be retaken.
