What you pay, by route

  • Exam alone: $599. It suits candidates who already own study material.
  • Inside a study program: see the bundle row above. Those prices are dated Nov 4, 2026 and move with frequent sales; higher tiers include a retest, which matters if you expect a second attempt.
  • Retest: $199 each time.
  • Other charges: an extension, a no-show or late cancellation, and a re-grade each carry a fee (amounts in the table).

After you pass, the next bill is the $99 recertification fee every 2 years; CEU courses are billed separately.

How to book, step by step

  1. Confirm you meet the entry rules, including a current CPR/AED card (who can sit).
  2. Pay for the exam, alone or in a program. Scheduling usually opens one to two business days after sign-up.
  3. In the Customer Portal, open the exam menu and choose Schedule; the portal hands you to PSI to pick a date and a place.
  4. Mind the clock: it runs from the day you buy, and an extension costs extra.
  5. Changes need the notice shown in the rescheduling row; missing the slot or canceling too late costs a fee.

PSI center or home sitting

Both routes are run by PSI and deliver the same closed-book exam. At a center, PSI supplies the room and the computer. Online, the exam runs on your own machine under a live remote proctor. Pick online only when you can guarantee two uninterrupted hours in a quiet, private room, and review PSI's system requirements when you book.

The deadline people miss

The window (180 days) counts from the purchase date, not from when you finish studying. If the course takes longer than planned, the extension is a paid add-on (see other charges in the table).
